Menopause is the point in a woman’s life when menstruation stops altogether and means you can no longer have children naturally.

But menopause doesn’t happen suddenly. Usually starting from age 45 onwards, it can take years to go through the menopause, from when menstruation starts to become irregular or heavy to after your periods stop completely for over 12 months.

Menopause is a different experience for every woman but it’s often a challenging time. The good news is that you don’t have to manage on your own and put up with difficult symptoms. Our personalised menopause counselling and management service can help make life easier.

Who our menopause management service can help

Our specially trained consultants can provide advice and help to women who have common menopause signs and symptoms.

Contact us to talk about how we can help if you are experiencing any of the following:

  • your menstruation is very irregular or has disappeared
  • you have very heavy or prolonged bleeding
  • your periods have stopped for more than 1 year, but you’ve started spotting blood
  • you’re having hot flushes, difficulty sleeping, vaginal dryness or you’re feeling depressed or irritable

How we work out the best management plan for you

When you come to see us for a consultation, our experienced staff will give you a complete health check.

We’ll talk through your health history and examine you. We can also carry out an ultrasound exam and hormonal tests, so we can find out exactly what your personal needs are and create a customised menopause management plan for you.

What your menopause management plan might include

The menopause is different for different women, so your management and treatment plan will be tailored especially for you.

As part of your plan, we may:

  • give you advice and help on lifestyle changes to manage symptoms, such as healthy eating, regular exercise or weight loss
  • prescribe treatment for specific symptoms, such as cream to relieve vaginal dryness
  • in some cases, prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT), if it’s right for you

If we find that you need more advanced, specialist treatment, such as surgery to remove , we can also refer you to the right service.

Frequently asked questions about menopause

The menopause is when your body gradually stops producing eggs. It’s a natural and normal part of ageing. But the hormonal changes that make menopause happen can cause difficult symptoms. The menopause can take years. The point up to when menstruation stops completely is often called the perimenopause.

Apart from your periods stopping, getting heavy or irregular, the common symptoms of menopause include hot flushes, night sweats, insomnia, vaginal dryness, low sex drive and feeling irritable or depressed.

Menopause can start at different ages for different women. The most common time for it to start is when you’re between 45 and 55 years old.

There’s no definite number of years that menopause lasts. Symptoms may go on for years before and after your menstruation stops completely.

An unhealthy lifestyle, like not eating healthily or being overweight, can make symptoms more difficult to manage. Speak to our team about the healthy lifestyle steps that can help ease your symptoms.
